Internal Linking Is the Fastest Lever in SEO, and Almost Nobody Uses It Right
Backlinks take a year because they depend on other people’s decisions. Internal links depend on nobody but you, and most sites still treat them as a three-links-per-post afterthought instead of the structure that tells search engines and AI systems what you’re actually about.
The one-year myth
“SEO takes a year” is true of exactly one lever: backlinks. Earning links from other domains depends on other people noticing you, deciding you’re worth citing, and getting around to it. None of that is in your control, and all of it compounds slowly, which is why the timeline got generalized into a rule about SEO as a whole. Internal linking doesn’t have that constraint. Every link between two pages on your own site is a decision you make today, and it takes effect the moment the page is crawled again, not whenever a stranger on another domain feels like citing you. - Crawl efficiency. A well-linked hub gets crawled and re-crawled more often than an orphan page several clicks from anywhere, which matters more as archives grow.
- Authority distribution. Whatever authority a page has, from backlinks or age, passes to whatever it links to. A page with no outbound links to your money pages is hoarding authority it should be spending.
- Reader depth. A reader who lands on one article and finds three genuinely relevant next steps reads longer and arrives at the BOFU page with more context, which is the same argument behind reading for months before the call.
- Faster AI crawling of new content. A new article linked prominently from an already-authoritative hub gets discovered and understood by both search and AI crawlers faster than one sitting unlinked until the next full crawl.
Linking is not a one-time task
The same decay that affects claims in an archive affects its links. A new article on a topic should absorb some of the internal links that used to point at an older, now-secondary article. An old article whose claims have been superseded should stop being the anchor target for that topic.
